Which boiling water tap type should you pick — boiling-only, 2-in-1, 3-in-1 or 4-in-1?

Think about the water functions you use most. If you only want instant boiling water and maximum simplicity, a boiling-only model will do. A 2-in-1 gives you boiling plus filtered cold (handy for drinking water), while a 3-in-1 supplies boiling plus your normal hot and cold mixer useful if you want one tap for everything. A 4-in-1 adds both filtered cold and chilled options, so pick that if you want hot, cold, filtered and chilled from one spout.

Will the under-sink tank fit my cabinet and how do you check?

Tanks sit beneath the sink, so measure the cupboard depth and the space around waste pipes before you buy. If you have a shallow cabinet or lots of plumbing, look at compact or "mini" models such as the Perrin & Rowe mini instant hot taps, or NeoTank-equipped InSinkErator models which are designed to be space-efficient. Also allow room if you want an optional NeoChiller or filter cartridge fitted alongside the tank.

How do you choose the right finish and spout style for your kitchen?

Match the tap finish and spout shape to your existing fixtures and the look you want — there are chrome, black, brushed brass, copper, brushed steel, nickel and pewter options across our range. Spout shapes include curved, angular, L-shape and J-shape (for example the InSinkErator HC1100 is available in curved chrome and there are L-shape and J-shape 3-in-1 variants). For a contemporary kitchen pick matt black or chrome with an angular spout; for a traditional scheme consider Perrin & Rowe's pewter or brass finishes and classic shapes.

Will a boiling water tap really save you energy and worktop space compared with a kettle?

Yes — the taps use an under-sink tank that keeps a small volume of water hot at low running cost, so you avoid repeatedly boiling a full kettle. You also reclaim worktop space because you don't need a separate kettle. Bear in mind there's a higher upfront cost than a kettle, but if you make hot drinks or cook with boiling water frequently the ongoing running cost is usually lower.
