Which Insinkerator model is right for my household size and cooking habits?

Look at the horsepower and the “Suitable for” tags, smaller households do well with 0.55HP models, small to medium households suit 0.75HP, and busy or large households will want 0.75–1HP or the higher-spec Evolution units. The Evolution Plus range (the 750 or 1000) is aimed at heavier use and comes with quieter operation and more advanced grinding stages. If you cook for a family of four and produce a lot of plate scrapings, a 0.75HP Premium or an Evolution 750 gives reliable power without being oversized.

What food waste can I safely put down an Insinkerator and what should I avoid?

You can feed typical kitchen scraps such as chicken bones, bread crusts and fruit and vegetable leftovers; Insinkerator units grind food into fine particles rather than using knives. Avoid pouring hot fat or large, hard items like very big bones and non-food waste, and be cautious with long fibrous materials that can wrap up the mechanism. After feeding waste in, run a cold stream of water while grinding and keep it running for about 10 seconds to flush the particles through.

How loud are the units and which models are best if noise matters to you?

Noise performance varies across the range, some models advertise a 40% reduction in noise while others offer up to a 60% reduction. The Evolution-Quiet models are the quietest options and are designed for open-plan kitchens or households where you don't want the disposer to be noticeable. If low noise is a priority, choose an Evolution Plus unit rather than the basic Standard 460.

Which switch and accessories should I choose for convenient everyday use?

You can fit an air-switch for a neat worktop push button, a wall switch for traditional under-sink control or a batch-switch if you prefer to grind in short bursts; all are available as options. If you use a dishwasher, add a dishwasher connector so the dishwasher drains into the disposer correctly. For an island sink, an air-switch gives the cleanest finish because it needs no wiring through the worktop.

How much maintenance do these disposers need and can I clean the baffle easily?

Maintenance is straightforward, run cold water while you grind and keep it running for about 10 seconds afterwards to flush the unit. Most models come with an easy-clean baffle and several have removable baffles so you can rinse them by hand; four out of five included in our range units show a baffle that is easy to clean. Also note the range carries warranties from two to four years, so you have cover if a unit develops a fault.
