I use a wheelchair, should I choose a wall-hung or a semi-recessed basin for easier access?

For the most knee clearance a wall-hung basin is the best option because it leaves the floor beneath completely free, so you can slot your knees under the basin easily; examples include many compact wall-hung basins around 380–500mm wide. Semi-recessed basins can work if you want some countertop or shallow storage, but make sure the cabinet is low-profile or has a cut-out to preserve knee space. If you want both access and a neat look, a wall-hung "easy access" model such as RAK's 500mm option gives good clearance while still looking modern.

What basin width should I choose for a small cloakroom versus an en-suite or family bathroom?

For a cloakroom, compact widths of about 300–380mm suit tight spaces and still leave room to move, for example the 300mm Scudo or 350mm Ceramica options. En-suites often work well with 400–500mm basins which are comfortable without dominating the room, several RAK and Affine models we have in stock sit in that range. If you need a family bathroom with two users at once, look at wider basins from 550mm up to 800mm or more, such as the 550mm semi-recessed styles or the Ideal Standard 800mm options.

How many tap holes do I need and what are the practical differences?

A single tap hole is for a mixer tap and is the most common, with 1-tap-hole basins widely available in the range. Two tap holes suit traditional separate hot-and-cold pillar taps, as seen on the Park Lane traditional 2-tap-hole basin. Zero tap holes are for wall-mounted taps or where you plan a separate deck-mounted mixer plate; there are several 0-tap-hole options if you prefer wall fittings. Three tap holes are rare and used for special tap configurations or integrated accessories.

Which material should I choose for durability and easy cleaning?

Vitreous china is the most common choice here because it is hard-wearing, non-porous and keeps a glossy finish that's easy to wipe clean. Ceramic basins are also standard and perform similarly, while marble is offered as a premium option with a different look but needs more careful maintenance. If you want low fuss for a busy bathroom, a gloss white vitreous china basin such as the popular RAK or Affine models is a sensible, durable pick.

Can I have undersink storage and still keep the basin accessible?

Yes, many mobility basins are designed so you can add undersink storage while maintaining movement; semi-recessed basins allow a narrow vanity that keeps the basin partly exposed for access. Alternatively, choose a wall-hung basin and pair it with a shallow, open shelf or bespoke low-profile unit that doesn't block knee space; for example, compact wall-hung models around 450–500mm are often used with minimal shelving. Be sure the storage doesn't extend forward beyond the basin's projection so you retain clear access.
