What’s the real difference between ceramic and fireclay sinks, and which one should you choose?

Ceramic and fireclay are both glazed earthenware but fireclay is fired at higher temperatures, making it denser and more chip-resistant, while ceramic can be slightly lighter and still very durable. Our range shows 68 ceramic and 45 fireclay options, so you’ll find both materials in popular styles like Belfast and Butler bowls. If you want a heavy-duty everyday workhorse, for example a cleaner’s sink with leg, fireclay is a great pick; if you prefer a traditional-looking inset or apron-front sink in a busy but cared-for family kitchen, ceramic gives the classic look with long life.

How do I decide between 1, 1.5 and 2 bowl sinks for my kitchen routine?

Think about how you use the space: a single bowl (we have many single-bowl inset and fireclay options) gives maximum washing space and suits small kitchens, 1.5 bowls are versatile for washing and food prep and are widely available in our range, and 2 bowls work well if you separate washing and prep or run a lot of soaking. For example, a 1.5 bowl inset sink lets you wash pans in the larger bowl while rinsing veg in the smaller one without needing extra drainer space.

Which sink sizes and depths should I look for to fit my worktop and cupboard space?

Our sinks span a wide range: lengths from about 200mm up to 1,099mm, widths in similar bands, and depths commonly between 200–299mm with deeper options available up to 699mm. Measure the cabinet width and the cut-out space you have; a typical cleaner’s single bowl is around 535 x 515mm, while Butler styles can be 220 x 795mm, so you can match a sink to a 600mm base unit or choose a wider 900–1,000mm Belfast if you have the room. Also check whether you prefer a rectangular bowl or a square one for a more compact footprint.

I love the cottage look—what finishes and styles will give me that feeling?

For a cottage or traditional kitchen, choose Belfast, Butler or apron-front styles and classic finishes like white or beige; we stock many white ceramics and a selection of black sinks if you want contrast. A white Belfast double bowl or a Butler single bowl in fireclay will pair beautifully with vintage wood cabinets and thick worktops, offering that authentic farmhouse character while staying practical for daily use.

How easy are ceramic and fireclay sinks to keep clean and resistant to stains or heat?

Both materials have a glazed surface that resists stains and heat, which is why the collection is described as having “supreme longevity” and strong resistance for busy kitchens. Clean with a mild detergent and a soft cloth; avoid abrasive scourers that can dull the glaze. For everyday use, wipe away acidic spills promptly and you’ll keep a white or black sink looking pristine for years.
