Page 13 of 19 Double Radiators

Return to page 1 of Double Radiators

Double radiators feature double panels for additional heat output. This makes them perfect for larger rooms that are harder to heat.

Plumbworld offer many options to suit your space, including double panel radiators, double designer radiators and double column radiators. So, whether you’re after a stylish modern look or a more traditional radiator, there’s sure to be something for you.

Our radiators come in a range of different dimensions to suit the space you have available. If you’ve got plenty of wall space and want maximum heat output, a large radiator may be suitable. Slim, wide radiators easily fit underneath windowsills. Tall radiators are ideal if you don’t have much wall space to spare.

Panel Configuration

Single: A single panel, often with one convector fin. Shortest projection designed for smaller rooms.

Double: Two parallel panels, often with one or two convector fins, designed for medium to large rooms.

Triple: Three parallel panels, often with multiple convector fins, to maximise heat output. Largest projection designed for larger rooms.

How do I know what heat output (BTU) I need and which panel configuration will give it?

Look at the BTU bands available — you can choose radiators from small outputs (under 1,000 BTU) up to large outputs (10,000–25,000 BTU) listed on the site. Double-panel radiators (Type 21 or 22) give significantly more heat than single panels because they have two parallel panels and convector fins; Type 22 (double panel, double convector) produces more heat than Type 21 (double panel, single convector). If you have a medium to large room choose a double panel double convector in the 3,000–6,000 BTU range or higher depending on room size; for a small bedroom a 1,000–2,000 BTU double panel may be enough. If you tell me your room dimensions and window area I can suggest a target BTU and a suitable Type 21 or 22 size.

I have limited wall width but plenty of height — should I pick a vertical radiator or a slim horizontal one?

Vertical double radiators are ideal when you have little horizontal wall space; the category contains many vertical options with heights up to 2200mm, and common tall sizes around 1600–1800mm. Slim, wide models work well if you can fit under a windowsill — the site shows low heights such as 300–400mm paired with long widths like 1000–1400mm. For example, if your wall is narrow but tall, a 1800mm vertical double radiator gives high output without taking horizontal space; if you have a long window sill, a 300mm high by 1200mm wide slim double radiator sits neatly underneath.

Which material should I choose — aluminium, steel or mild steel — and how does it affect heating and look?

Aluminium heats up quickly and is lightweight, so it responds fast if you want rapid warming, while steel and mild steel (the most common options on the site) retain heat well and are very durable for everyday use. The site lists aluminium, mild steel and steel by the dozens, so you'll find many finishes in each material. If you need a fast-responding radiator for a bathroom choose aluminium; for a living room where steady, lasting warmth matters, a mild steel double panel is a good, long-lasting choice.

I like a traditional look — are double column radiators still practical compared with flat designer panels?

Yes, double column radiators combine strong heat output with a traditional appearance; the site shows many column-profile options alongside flat and oval profiles. Column radiators have deeper projection and trap more air between columns, which increases heat output, whereas flat designer panels are slimmer and give a cleaner, modern look. For example, a Park Lane Colosseum double column at 300 x 425mm looks period-correct in a Victorian room and still delivers solid heat, while a flat double-panel radiator is preferable if you want a minimalist kitchen run.

I need a radiator to go beneath a low windowsill — which heights and types will fit without losing heat efficiency?

Choose radiators listed at low heights — there are many at 300–400mm — and opt for a wide double panel to maximise heat across the small height. Slim, wide double panels sit neatly under sills and still offer substantial output because of their two panels and convector fins; triple panels give even more heat but project further from the wall. For instance, a 300mm high by 1200mm wide Type 22 (double panel, double convector) will fit under a low sill and produce far more warmth than a single-panel slim model.
