How do I pick the right size and heat output for my bathroom?

Look at both dimensions and heat output: widths typically run from about 400–650mm and heights from around 700–1200mm, while heat outputs on the range are grouped as 1–999, 1000–1999 and 2000–2999 BTU (you'll also see Watts included in our range, 150W or 250W). A compact en-suite will usually be fine with a narrow, 700 x 400–500mm rail rated around 150–250W (or in the 1–999 BTU group), whereas a large family bathroom suits a wider 1200 x 600mm rail with higher output. If you want the rail to heat the whole room as well as warm towels, choose a higher-wattage model; if you just want warm towels, a lower-wattage unit will do. Check the specific model's Watts or BTU against your room size for the best match.

My bathroom isn't connected to central heating — can I still have a heated towel rail?

Yes; electric heated towel rails are designed for exactly that situation and can be installed where central heating isn't available. You can choose from simple dry-element models like the Solaro Biava or fully programmable and smart options such as the TCP Smart WiFi rail. Dry-element rails give reliable, straightforward warmth, while programmable or WiFi models let you set schedules and save energy if you only use the bathroom at certain times. Pick a wet-vs-dry element based on whether you want a permanent heating source or a plug-in, self-contained rail.

Which finish and profile will work best with my bathroom style and maintenance needs?

For a classic, easy-clean look chrome is common and bright, while matt black, anthracite or white give a contemporary, softer appearance; brass and brushed finishes add a designer touch but may need a little more polishing. Profiles matter too: bar rails are excellent for hanging multiple towels, flat and square panels read as modern and sit neatly against the wall, and curved rails give a softer silhouette. If you have a minimalist scheme try a flat or square profile in matt black; for a period look, polished brass or chrome bars complement traditional brassware. Think about how many towels you need to dry and how much visible cleaning each finish will require.

Are very low-wattage or slim designer rails effective, or are they mainly decorative?

Slim, low-wattage rails can be excellent at warming and drying towels but often won't noticeably heat the whole room, a designer single-bar polished rail such as the Warmup Burdock at 19W is ideal for towel warming but won't replace bathroom heating. Models with outputs in the 1–999 BTU or around 150–250W are common when your main aim is towel warmth; choose a higher output if you want the rail to contribute to room temperature. So, if you want a statement piece that also keeps towels cosy, a low-wattage designer rail will work; if you need room heating too, opt for larger dimensions and higher Watts.

Do programmable or smart electric towel rails save you money and are they worth the extra cost?

Programmable and WiFi-enabled rails let you run the heater only when needed, which can lower running costs compared with leaving a basic electric rail on all day; models such as the TCP Smart WiFi 800 x 500mm let you set schedules and control the rail remotely. The downside is a higher purchase price compared with simple dry-element units, but if you use the bathroom at predictable times (mornings and evenings), scheduling can make them pay back through reduced energy use. If you value convenience and tighter control, a smart or programmable rail is a practical upgrade; if you only need occasional towel warming, a basic electric model will be cheaper up front.
