Which fuel type gas or electric will suit my room best?

Gas fires give stronger, continuous heat and are common in traditional inset or outset designs, so they suit larger or open-plan rooms where you need real warmth. Electric fires are very flexible because many models need no flue and can be wall mounted, freestanding or inset, and offer realistic effects such as Optiflame or Optimyst for atmosphere with lower heat output. If you want primary heating choose a gas model with higher output in the 3–5kW bands; if you want mood lighting and simple siting choose an electric stove or wall fire. Brands to watch for gas include Flavel and Valor, while Dimplex and Adam offer a wide electric range.

How do I work out the right size and depth for my new fire or stove?

Measure the available width, height and recess depth first and match those to the product ranges: common widths are 401–600mm and heights often 501–700mm, while many models have depths of 101–200mm. For a slim wall-mounted fire pick shallow depths (0–100mm or 101–200mm); for a hearth-mounted stove allow 200–300mm depth for the body and any hearth projection. As a practical example, a 500mm wide inset fire is ideal for a 520mm recess, leaving small clearance for trims and ventilation.

What style and finish will work with my decor: traditional or modern?

There many traditional and modern styles, so match the finish to the room: black, chrome or brushed steel suit contemporary spaces, while brass, bronze or cream complement traditional rooms. Fuel bed choices such as coal, log effect or pebbles also change the look, coal and brass trims feel classic, log-effect or ceramic beds feel more modern. choose a hearth-mounted brass-trimmed coal fire for a period sitting room, or a chrome, glass-fronted wall fire with pebble bed for a minimalist lounge.

Should I choose a glass-fronted fire or an open-fronted model?

Glass-fronted fires are safer and more efficient because the glass reflects heat into the room, making them good for family homes and continuous use. Open-fronted models give a more traditional, lifelike flame but can be less efficient and may radiate heat differently. If you want a family lounge heater pick a glass-fronted inset gas or electric; if you prioritise the open-flame look for a cosy hearth, an open-fronted or freestanding stove will feel more authentic.

How important are the control types and which should I choose?

Control types affect convenience and daily use: most models are manual, which is economical but means you operate the fire at the unit; remotes and remote-plus-manual options add ease, timers and sometimes thermostatic control. For a wall-mounted fire in a living room you will likely prefer a remote control for comfort and convenience, while a simple freestanding stove used occasionally may suit manual control. Easy-access slide controls can also be useful if you want clean lines but still straightforward operation.
