What are mixer taps?

Mixer taps are a single tap that draws from both the hot and cold water supplies. It mixes them to flow together out of a single spout unlike the more traditional tap method in the UK which draws water through separate hot and cold taps, keeping the flow separate.

 

How does a mixer tap work?

Like the name suggests, a mixer tap mixes a hot and cold water supply in a valve to reach your chosen temperature before it reaches the spout. You are able to set the water temperature as it flows from the taps, making it easier for t running a bath, washing or shaving.

 

Are all bath mixer taps a standard size?

The taps themselves, what you see above the basin or on the bath, can be different sizes, such as a handle or spout. However, taps, regardless of type, are made to standard dimensions for pipes etc, but you will need to check the hole distances of your current or old baths or basins, in case mixer taps are not compatible.

 

How to install bath mixer taps?

Unpack your tap after delivery and check for any damage or faults before you start with installation. Check for any instructions with your taps.

Then, as always, turn off your water at the mains before attempting any bathroom DIY.

Process

Remove Your Old Tap

Once the water supply is switched off, you need to remove your old tap. Look under the bathtub to find two flexible tap connectors from the internal plumbing in your wall, up into the tap. Disconnect these connectors using an adjustable wrench to remove the tap.

Undo the nut from below that holds the tap in place. Once the nut and any washers have come off, your old tap will lift out of the tap holes. Use a wet cloth to clean the bath surface and remove any dirt and grime from the old tap.

Hold in Place
Hold the new tap upright and fix a washer to the bottom of it.

Screw in
Screw the flexible tap tails - these connect up the hot and cold water feeds - into the tap body and tighten by hand. Then, screw the fixing studs into the bottom of the tap.

Position in Place
Position the tap over the tap hole of your bath basin or countertop and make sure that it’s at a 90-degree angle to the bath rim. Lower the flexible tap tails - or connectors - and fixing studs through it.

Washers & Plates
Below the tap hole, attach a washer and a retaining plate onto the fixing studs to keep the tap in place.

Nuts & Studs
Screw the back nuts onto the fixing studs by hand, this is a manual job. Then, if you’re happy the tap is in the correct position, tighten the nuts ensuring you don’t damage the bath.

Check for Leaks
Turn the water back on at the mains and check for any leaks. If you do have any leaks, check the connectors/flexible tails and tighten them.

How do I know which tap control (single lever, twin lever or cross head) will work best for everyday use and my water pressure?

Single lever mixers give you fast, one-handed control and suit most modern bathrooms; many single-lever and monotrou options on the site are rated for a range of pressures, including "suitable for all systems". Twin lever or cross-head taps are great if you want separate hot and cold handles for a traditional look, but you should check the product's pressure suitability. Look for low (0.1–0.4 bar), medium (0.5–0.9 bar) or high (1 bar+) systems. If you have a low-pressure gravity system, filter for taps marked low or "suitable for all systems"; if you have a combi boiler (high pressure) most high-pressure models will perform perfectly.

Which mounting style, deck-mounted, wall-mounted or freestanding, suits different bath types and layouts?

Deck-mounted mixers sit on the bath rim and are the most common choice for built-in baths; you'll see many deck models in the range requiring one to four tap holes. Wall-mounted mixers free up the bath rim and suit baths with a plain edge or when you want a cleaner, modern look; several black and brass wall-mounted options are listed. Freestanding mixers are ideal for standalone baths where there's no rim to mount taps and they lend a strong design statement, look for the few freestanding options if you have a roll-top or designer bath.

How many tap holes does my bath need and how do hole counts match different mixer types?

A single-lever monobloc or monotrou bath mixer usually needs just one hole; many products are listed under "1" hole. Twin lever or traditional two-handle mixers commonly need two holes, while some more complex tap sets with separate spouts or diverters use three or even four holes. If you want a bath shower mixer with an integrated diverter or separate handset, check listings showing "1 + 2" or "3" holes so the configuration matches your bath's pre-drilled holes.

Which finish should I choose, chrome, matte black or brushed brass, for durability and style?

Chrome is the most common and hard-wearing finish and works well if you want a bright, reflective look; many models such as Hansgrohe and Park Lane come in chrome. Matt black gives a bold, contemporary look and suits modern round or square styles, though it can show soap scum more readily so wipe regularly; you'll find dozens of black options like the Architeckt and Merano ranges. Do you need a bath shower mixer and what are the practical benefits?

A bath shower mixer gives you the convenience of filling the bath and running a shower from the same valve, perfect if you don't have a separate shower enclosure; models such as the Merano Lund and Hansgrohe Rebris S include a handset or showerhead. If you want a streamlined look and fewer fittings, a bath shower mixer is sensible, and it's especially useful in family bathrooms where quick showers are common. If you prefer a dramatic spout effect, waterfall mixers are available too, offering faster fill times and a visual focal point.
