What is a close coupled toilet?

A close coupled toilet has the pan and cistern close together - 'coupled' - to make a single unit, with the cistern sitting against but not mounted to the wall. As such, close coupled toilets are very convenient and very popular, and most modern bathrooms include this style of toilet.
