First time I've fitted tails to a radiator, and had a wee leak at first. Second time all's fine. What I learnt was that you can not be shy with the PTFE tape! Looks great, not had much used apart from testing, as it's summer, so no heating on yet.

Can a towel rail heat a bathroom?

Most heated towel rails provide enough heat for your entire bathroom while, obviously, keeping your towels fluffy and warm. If you have a larger bathroom, it may need an additional source of heating to warm the room sufficiently.

The majority of UK bathrooms are small, so while the room itself may be quite cold with tiled walls and floors don’t go over the top when it comes to heating. Small spaces can heat up surprisingly fast - especially if there are fewer windows.

 

What are the types of heated towel rails?

At Plumbworld, we stock a variety of towel radiators, including curved, flat, flat panel, square bar, anthracite, and traditional heated towel rails.

 

Curved Chrome Heated Towel Rails

Crossbars are curved outwards away from the wall. As well as being visually more interesting than a flat rail, this provides a slightly greater heat output as the crossbars are slightly longer. They are a great choice for bathrooms with organically curved bathroom accessories, taps and suites in general.

 

Flat Chrome Heated Towel Rails

Flat chrome heated towel rails are often called ladder towel rails. The chrome sides and crossbars are straight and connected at right angles. They sit flat against the wall and are always a popular choice, providing a clean contemporary look while offering plenty of heat for towels and the bathroom as well.

 

Anthracite Heated Towel Rails

Traditional Heated Towel Radiators

If you’d rather have something different to all the contemporary towel radiator designs on the market, then a traditional towel radiator is for you. Our traditional heated towel radiators combine classic styling and a rust-free lifespan with modern technology and will look stunning in any traditionally-styled bathroom with complementing bathroom accessories.

 

What size heated towel radiator do I need?

This really depends on the size of your bathroom - a larger space will need a larger heated towel radiator than a smaller washroom.

 

Two important factors decide the size of the radiator or heated towel rail you will need.

 

The first is the temperature you want to maintain in your bathroom - which is relatively straightforward - when the shower or bath is switched-off. This can help reduce the build-up of mould.

 

The second can be more complicated, which takes into account the heat loss from your bathroom. These can depend on the size of windows and, in particular, the construction materials used in your home. A bathroom traditionally has a limited number of windows for privacy, so heat loss is less of a concern.

 

If you choose too large a size, it won’t be economical. If you go too small, the room won’t reach the temperature you want.

 

Heated towel rails: electric or central heating, which fuel should I use?

The first and most important decision is what fuel you are going to use to run your towel rail. There are two main fuel types - central heating and electric - but understanding how they work and what their limitations are will help you decide which is best for your home.

 

Central Heating Towel Radiator

Here, the towel rail is plumbed into your central heating system, just like every other radiator in the house, and the bars are filled with water. If you have your central heating on a timer, your towel rail will switch on and off at the same time as the heating. Most towel rails also have thermostatic valve controls which allow you to turn it up and down as required.

 

Electric Towel Radiator

These towel radiators run on electricity and entirely independent of your central heating system. They can be an excellent choice for homes which are not centrally heated or where the boiler lacks the capacity to run another radiator. Electric-heated towel rails can also be fitted with a timer to set them to switch on and off when you please. For warm towels in summer, this is a good choice.

Look at the costs for each type of towel radiator and investigate their running costs. Make your decision based on what is most appropriate for your home.

If your home is centrally heated, you will probably have a radiator in the bathroom already. Unless your bathroom is enormous, there is no need to run both a towel rail and a radiator in the same room. 

Removing the existing radiator while installing a new towel rail could save you money on plumber’s costs too, as, in most cases, the new unit can be put in the same place as the old radiator.

It’s worth noting that an electric towel rail will not provide the same cost savings unless you are replacing an existing electric heater or towel rail. So, take advice from an electrician or plumber as to the most sensible place to locate your new towel rail.

How to fit a heated towel rail in a bathroom?

If you are competent at DIY and have the required tools, then replacing your radiators with a water-filled heated towel rail might be something you can tackle yourself. 

Make sure you know what the job entails, watch lots of videos online to show you step by step how to complete the job, and remember to switch the water supply off.

Most of us, however, will need to get the professionals in to do the job. You’ll need to get hold of a plumber if you are thinking of putting in a heated towel rail which will be attached to the central heating system. Plus, you’ll need an electrician for an electric towel rail. 

There will also be restrictions on where in the bathroom you can locate it, as not all rails can be used within a certain distance from water. Check the specifications of the towel rail you’re thinking of buying and get advice from an electrician if confused.

 

 

How do I decide between central heating, electric and dual fuel towel radiators for my bathroom?

Think about how and when you want heat. If your home already uses central heating, a central‑heating towel radiator will integrate neatly and work whenever the system is on. If you don't have a wet system or need heat in summer, electric models plug into the mains and there are compact options such as the DuraTherm Electric Flat White 700 x 400mm at 150W. Dual fuel gives the best of both, it connects to your hot water and includes an electric element so you can run it year‑round, but you'll need both pipework and an electrical connection.

What size towel radiator and heat output should I choose for my space?

Use the radiator's physical size and heat output to match the room: smaller cloakrooms suit compact models like 700 x 400mm (examples in our range at 150W), medium family bathrooms work well with popular sizes such as 1200 x 500mm or 1200 x 600mm, and larger bathrooms can use 1600–1800mm heights.
