Which type of bath is best if you want both regular showers and occasional long soaks?

A shower bath (L-shaped or P-shaped) is ideal because it gives you extra showering room while still keeping a full bath for soaking. L-shaped baths give a clear squared-off area for a shower tray, while P-shaped baths have a rounded end that creates more standing space for a shower. Many of these shower baths are sold as bundles with a shower screen and panels, so you get a tidy showering area straight away. If you mainly want deep relaxation and a design statement instead, a freestanding bath gives you more depth and looks dramatic in the centre of the room.

How do I work out what size bath will fit my bathroom?

Measure the available length and width where the bath will sit and compare with common sizes such as 1500, 1600, 1700 and 1800 mm in length and widths from 700 up to 900 mm. For a small bathroom, a 1600 x 700 mm bath or a compact curved 1600 x 700 mm model saves space; a 1700 x 700–750 mm is the most common standard. Leave space for a screen or tiles at the shower end and ensure the doorway and any panels can be manoeuvred in during installation.

What panel option do I need for an alcove or corner installation?

If your bath sits in an alcove you will need a side panel for the long side. For a corner bath you will need a side and end panel set to cover both the long and short exposed faces. Some baths are offered without panels, and many bundles include the front and end panels so you don’t have to buy them separately.

What’s the difference between single-ended, double-ended and J-shaped baths for everyday use?

Single-ended baths have taps and one sloping end, so they work well when your fixtures are clustered at one side. Double-ended baths slope at both ends so two people can recline comfortably, making them good for couples or for a luxurious feel. J-shaped baths have a shaped back that gives extra room for showering and a more ergonomic recline, and are usually handed left or right to suit your layout.
