Bathrooms are fast becoming a place of freeform elegance and minimalistic design. You don't want to be distracted by clutter when you're trying to relax, and everything in your bathroom should be designed in a way that makes your comfort and enjoyment a top priority.

Do away with the door, and you can walk in and out of your shower enclosures as you please, all without the hassle of fiddling with shower doors when you just want to wash. The look of doorless walk-in shower enclosures may be simple, but the aesthetic impact they have on a bathroom is striking. Plus, a lack of moving parts means they're simple to keep clean, too, ensuring that it always remains as good as new.

How do I decide what width and height of walk-in shower screen will fit my bathroom?

Measure the clear wall space where the screen will sit and allow a little overlap if it's against tiling or an alcove; common widths range from 700mm up to 1700mm and many screens are 1950mm tall, which suits standard ceiling heights. For a small ensuite, a 700–900mm screen keeps the look balanced; a family bathroom often works well with 1200–1400mm to give ample showering space. If you want a floor-level wet room you can select “None” under tray and use a larger panel to control splash.

Should I get a frameless or framed walk-in screen, and how thick should the glass be?

Frameless screens give a minimal, modern feel and are easiest to keep looking clean; the range here is largely frameless and most models use 8mm safety glass for a rigid, secure panel. Framed options can be slightly more forgiving on uneven walls, but frameless at 8mm is the best balance of sleek appearance and stability for widths above about 800mm. There are a few 6mm panels suitable for very small screens, but stick with 8mm if you want the firmer, premium feel.

Do I need a return panel, and should it be fixed or hinged?

A return panel reduces splash and helps define the shower area; fixed returns are simple and steady, while hinged returns fold open to improve access and ventilation. If your shower is in a tight corridor or you want easier entry for cleaning, a hinged return is practical; for a wide open layout a fixed return does the job and keeps the aesthetic seamless. Many walk-in sets offer both single and double configurations so you can match the splash protection to your layout.

Which frame colour and glass effect will hide water marks but still feel bright?

Black or grid finishes add bold contrast and hide small marks visually, while chrome keeps the space feeling bright and reflective; brushed brass introduces warmth for a softer, boutique look. For glass, fluted or frosted effects mask water marks and offer privacy, whereas clear glass keeps the room feeling open and airy. A white tiled bathroom with a black frame and fluted glass gives character while reducing the need for constant wiping.

Do I need a tray and what type is right for my floor?

If your floor has space underneath for pipework, a low profile tray gives a near-level finish; on solid concrete floors you’ll usually need a raised tray to hide the waste pipe. Non-slip trays add safety if you have children or mobility concerns, and many walk-in packages come with low profile non-slip options to combine a flush look with grip. If you want a true wet room, select “None” for tray when selecting your preferred tray on our site and plan for a tiled floor with appropriate fall and drainage.
