A wet room shower does not include a shower tray as a traditional walk-in shower would, but instead has a drain set flush into the floor tiles, which are sloped slightly to control the direction of the water.

What do you need for a wet room?

  • Shower Fittings: Many people choose a concealed shower to achieve the minimalist look of a modern wet room.

  • Wet Room Floor Boards: These waterproof floor boards will be fixed below your tiles.

  • Tiles or Vinyl: Choose non-slip, durable tiles, as your floor will get very slippery. Non-porous tiles are preferable as they don’t need re-sealing.
  • Drainage: A drain will need to be fitted to your floor and connected to your waste outlet.

How to Build a Wet Room

While wet rooms look impressive, they aren’t necessarily difficult to build. Nevertheless, they are not a DIY job and should only be installed by professionals – you don’t want to find that water is leaking across the bathroom!

When building a wet room, the process will, of course, differ depending on your particular bathroom’s set-up and the type of products you use. However, building a wet room usually follows this general outline:

  1. Your bathroom floor will be removed to expose the floorboards where the wet room floor boarding will be placed - be aware of any pipes or cables.
  2. The waste pipe and drain base will be positioned for the shower.
  3. Floor panels will be relaid with a hole cut in for the drain – it is essential this is completely level to allow the new floor gradient to work.
  4. The wet room floorboards can be fit into place and should fit perfectly with the hole aligned for the drain.
  5. The rest of the bathroom floor will be laid with waterproof boarding. These boards will have a slight gradient to ensure the water runs towards the drain.
  6. The floor must then be coated in waterproof tape, covering and sealant to ensure all surfaces and gaps are watertight.
  7. The floor gradient must always be maintained to ensure the water can drain.
  8. Once all the waterproofing materials are set and dry, the floor tiles can be laid.
