How do I make sure the toilet seat will fit my pan?

Measure the distance between the two hinge holes on your pan (the hole centre width) and match it to the common ranges shown: 101–150 mm, 151–200 mm or 201–250 mm. Then pick the correct shape, D-shape, round, oval or square, to match the pan profile; D-shape seats suit many close-coupled toilets while round seats work on older, compact pans. Also check the hinge type (top fix, bottom fix or quick release) so the fixing method lines up with the access you have behind the cistern. If you're unsure, note a model's included in our range hole-centre range such as the 101–150 mm option and compare it with your measurement.

Is a soft-close seat worth the extra money?

Yes for most households, soft-close seats lower quietly, reducing noise and preventing the lid or seat from slamming and chipping the pan; 43 of the 51 seats here have soft-close. They're especially handy with children or en-suite bathrooms where you want minimal disturbance. A soft-close model such as the Affine or Bemis ranges gives that gentle close without much extra cost. If you prefer a very simple budget seat, there are eight non–soft-close options available.

Which material should I choose, plastic, wood or urea-type?

If you want low maintenance and water resistance, thermoset plastic or urea-formaldehyde are excellent, they're hard-wearing and easy to wipe clean; Croydex and Bemis offer good plastic choices. Wooden or moulded-wood seats give a warmer feel and a traditional look, the Ceramica grooved wooden seat, but they're slightly heavier and need a bit more care. Vinyl-wrapped MDF is budget-friendly but less durable long-term; pick the material that matches the look and traffic level of your bathroom.

What hinge type and material should I look for?

Choose quick-release hinges if you want the seat off easily for cleaning, 16 models have quick-release. Top fix hinges are the easiest to fit from above when you can't access bolts underneath, while bottom fix suits installers with access under the pan. For longevity and a polished look pick chrome-plated or stainless-steel hinges; plastic hinges are common and cheaper but can wear quicker. Stainless steel is best if your bathroom gets very humid or if you want a premium finish.

Are slim or luxury seats worth buying for a modern bathroom?

Yes, slim and luxury seats give a neater, contemporary profile and often tighter tolerances for fit, options include the Affine Slim and Provence luxury ranges priced around the current product price. They suit modern square or D-shape basins and make compact cloakrooms feel sleeker. If you want a high-end look and slightly better comfort, pay a bit more for a slim luxury seat; for a spare WC a mid-range soft-close seat will do the job well.
